Ashraf and Sana, folded into one word.
In Urdu and Persian, ashna means the one who is known — familiar, recognised, no longer a stranger. It is the word for a face you would find in any crowd.
Two families who have spent their lives in the same work — one in Vijayawada, one in Mangalagiri — arrive at the same evening in October. Both Ashraf and Sana read political science, which is to say both spend their days thinking about how people are meant to live together.
The nikah is a contract before it is a celebration: two people, freely consenting, witnessed. Everything after it is the making of a home.
